UKOTs Learning Series,  12th December 2024

Behavioural Science

This session focused on Applying Behaviroual Science to Leadership and Public Health. 

Led by Dr Dale Weston, a PhD qualifedBehavioural scientist with expertise in the application of psychological theory, analysis, and research methods to answer questions of public health importance. 

Learning objectives: 

  • Understand behavioural science and where it can be applied: Learners will be able to define behavioural science and will be able to identify contexts in which it can be/ is used within their professional area.   

  • Understand a behavioural science informed approach to public health interventions: Learners will be able to articulate the key steps in the behavioural science informed approach to developing public health interventions   

  • Begin to think about public health problems through a behavioural lens: Learners will undertake the first steps in conducting a behavioural diagnosis to help think about their public health problems in behavioural terms.

Project Management and Personal Development Plans

This session focused on Planning for the future: Project Management & Personal Development Plans. 

Led by Sarah Harris, Head of Project Capability in UK Health Security Agency, Margaret Onura, Building Digital UK, and Zara Patel, People Development Specialist in UK Health Security Agency. 

Learning Objectives: 

  • Work more efficiently by using essential project delivery skills and concepts.  

  • Gain an understanding of project delivery skills you might already be using.  

  • Recognise the different progression routes in a career pathway.  

  • Identify the five stages of career paving and the tools and resources to support.  

  • Explore current skills gaps and identify one action to take.

Four Workarounds

In our daily work we know that often ‘perfect’ isn’tan option, and we need something easy, smart, and quick: a workaround. Paulo Savaget, the author of the Four Workarounds and associate professor at Oxford University, gives a summary of what the four workarounds are and how they could be applied in practice in resource-limited settings. 

 Paulo highlights the importance of flexible leadership and ways in which we can embrace change and find unique solutions to today’s problems.

Leadership

This session focused on Leadership, where the topics of growth mindset, leading others through engagement and relationships, and influencing colleagues & senior stakeholders were explored. 

Led by Jessica Moll, Kayleigh Chard, and Stephanie Osagbaekhoe from the International Health Regulations Strengthening Team within UK Health Security Agency. 

Learning objectives: 

  • Understand the principles of a growth mindset: Learners will be able to define growth mindset and identify how it differs from a fixed mindset.  

  • Apply growth mindset in professional settings: Learners will identify ways to encourage continuous learning and improvement in themselves and others.  

  • Engage and motivate teams: Learners will learn techniques to inspire and energize team members, aligning their work with the team’s goals and values 

  • Communicate persuasively with stakeholders: Learners will develop skills to craft and deliver clear, compelling messages that resonate with stakeholders.
